Research & Conversations
This page brings together research, exhibitions, talks, workshops, and projects accumulated over more than two decades. From early experiments in interactive media and large-scale digital installations to current work on AI, creativity, education, and 13Collections (13C), each activity reflects an ongoing interest in how people create, learn, and adapt in changing technological and cultural contexts.
Organised into three periods, Early (1999–2001), Industry (2003–2011), and Current (2021–present), these works are presented not as separate chapters, but as different expressions of a continuing inquiry. Complementing these periods is an enduring commitment to academic practice and leadership, developed through more than two decades of teaching, curriculum design, and educational leadership across different cultures and educational systems.

Early (1999 - 2015)
Julius's research journey began through explorations of interactive art, computational media, and human experience. During this period, his collaborated work was presented at First Iteration (Melbourne, 1999), Transmediale (Berlin, 2000), SIGGRAPH (New Orleans, 2000), and CADE (Glasgow, 2001), investigating how emerging technologies reshape perception and human interaction.
Although the following years focused on higher education and industry, the same questions continued through practice. This continuity re-emerged in presentations at ISEA 2014 (Dubai) and ISEA 2015 (Vancouver), bridging early artistic practice with his current work exploring creativity, education, and human experience.

Academic Practice & Leadership
Over the past 25 years, Julius Yls has taught, designed curricula, and held academic leadership roles across institutions in New Zealand, Singapore, the Middle East, and China. Working across different cultures, education systems, and creative disciplines has shaped a perspective that connects practice, research, and leadership, while providing opportunities to observe how people learn, create, and adapt in changing contexts.
